Essential Unit Conversions for Runners
Whether you are training for a marathon or just starting your fitness journey, understanding different units of measurement is crucial. In many countries, race distances are measured in kilometers (5K, 10K), while training devices might be set to miles. Following a training plan written in a different unit system — or moving between countries — means constant conversion that should never distract you from the actual workout.
Our converter helps you seamlessly switch between Metric and Imperial systems. We support distance (km, miles, meters), speed (km/h, mph, m/s), and most importantly, running pace (min/km to min/mi). All conversions use exact factors — 1 mile = 1.60934 km — so you never lose precision from rounding.
Pace conversion is the most commonly needed running conversion, and it is also the one most calculators get slightly wrong by rounding too aggressively. A 5:00 min/km pace is exactly 8:02.9 min/mi, not 8:00. Over a marathon, that difference compounds significantly. Our converter uses the full precision factor so your training targets are always accurate.
Speed conversions matter for treadmill runners who track their workouts in km/h or mph. A treadmill set to 10 km/h corresponds to a 6:00 min/km pace, or about 16.1 seconds per 100 metres. Use the speed tab to quickly translate treadmill display values into race-equivalent paces before your next track session.
How does this work?
How many miles is a 5K?
A 5K (5,000 meters) is approximately 3.107 miles. A 10K is 6.214 miles, a Half Marathon (21.0975 km) is 13.109 miles, and a full Marathon (42.195 km) is 26.219 miles. These are the exact values used by World Athletics for record ratification.
What is a 5:00 min/km pace in min/mi?
A 5:00 min/km pace is 8:02.9 min/mi (often rounded to 8:03). A 4:00 min/km (marathon pace for a ~2:49 finish) equals 6:26.3 min/mi. A 3:00 min/km (elite 10K territory) equals 4:49.7 min/mi.
How do I convert km/h to min/km?
Divide 60 by the speed in km/h. For example, 10 km/h = 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00 min/km. At 12 km/h: 60 ÷ 12 = 5:00 min/km. At 15 km/h: 60 ÷ 15 = 4:00 min/km. Use the speed tab in our converter to get the exact result instantly.
