What is Performance by Age (WMA)?

Performance by Age allows you to compare your race times against other runners of different ages and sexes. It essentially answers the question, 'How good was my run compared to the world record for someone of my age and sex?'

We use the 2023 WMA (World Masters Athletics) factors, which are the most up-to-date road racing standards. A score of 100% represents a performance roughly equal to the world record, 80%+ is national class, and 70%+ is regional class.

For most recreational runners, an Age Grade score between 40% and 60% is typical. Scoring above 60% puts you among competitive age-group runners at regional level. Scores above 70% represent strong national-level performances, and anything above 80% is world-class for your age. Use the score not as a fixed label, but as a motivator to track improvement over the years — many runners find their Age Grade score actually improves into their 40s and 50s as they train smarter.

Performance by Age is particularly useful when comparing performances across years of your own running history. A 45-minute 10K at age 55 may represent a higher Age Grade than a 40-minute 10K you ran at age 30 — acknowledging that you are running at a higher level relative to your physiological peak.

Why should I use Performance by Age?

As we age, our physiological peak changes. Performance by Age keeps you motivated by showing your relative performance. It's a great way to compete in a virtual field where a 50-year-old's performance can be compared fairly against a 20-year-old's.

How can I improve my Age Grade score?

The same principles that improve raw race times also improve your Age Grade: consistent training volume, structured interval sessions, and adequate recovery. Masters runners (40+) benefit especially from strength training, which helps counteract the loss of fast-twitch muscle fibres that comes with age.

Does Performance by Age work for track distances?

The WMA factors used in our calculator are calibrated specifically for road races (5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon). Track events and ultramarathons have separate WMA tables. If you enter a track time, the result is an approximation and may be less accurate than it would be for an equivalent road race.
